Always tell someone your route and return time.
1. Debris Hut: Lean branches against a horizontal pole, pile with leaves/vegetation for insulation.
2. Lean-To: Quick to build, provides windbreak. Add reflective fire wall for warmth.
3. Snow Cave: Excellent insulation. Ensure ventilation hole stays clear.
Pro tip: Make your shelter just big enough for your body - smaller = warmer.
STOP Principle:
Most people found within 72 hours if they stay put.
Sun Navigation: Sun rises east, sets west. At noon, points south (N. Hemisphere). Stick shadow method: Mark shadow tip, wait 15min, mark new tip - line between marks points east-west.
Moon Navigation: Full moon rises east, sets west. Crescent moon: points to south if lit on left, north if lit on right (N. Hemisphere).
Star Navigation: Find Polaris (North Star) using Big Dipper. Southern Cross points south.
Mastery tip: Combine natural indicators - wind patterns, vegetation growth, snow melt patterns - to confirm direction.
